When doing a flooring project, know what type of product you want to install ahead of time. Consider the following before you make a selection:
- Carpet - Absorbs noise like no other floor covering, but absorbs dirt and water like no other soft surface as well. It makes a room cozy and warm, in addition, to being easy to fluff up with a vacuum; however, it does not last in high traffic areas, and will retain dust and pollen particles.
- Sheet Vinyl -Offers good value, good looks and durability. It is easy to clean, and high end vinyl will last 15 - 20 years or more. Cheaper vinyl collects dirt and stains easily, and cheaper vinyl needs to be replaced every five to seven years or so.
- Vinyl Tile - Very inexpensive and do-it-yourselfers can easily do a good installation, but can look cheap if not carefully installed and will not last as long as sheet vinyl.
- Hardwood - Long lasting (with proper care), and offers a warm, natural look, but does not stand up to water and can be expensive to maintain. Easily scratched. Easily dented by high heeled shoes.
- Laminate - Available in a myriad of colors and styles; costs less than real hardwood floors. Looks and lasts like vinyl, but is more expensive and is almost impossible to repair.
- Ceramic - Easy to keep clean, although grout does take some cleaning and sealing management. Lasts a long, long time. An almost infinite number of color, texture, design and style combinations. However, this hard surface bounces household noise, is cold to the touch and hard on the feet. Grout and tile are brittle and will crack if the floor is not sturdy.
